It Just Might Be a One-Shot Deal (4:16) is a song by Frank Zappa from his solo studio album Waka/Jawaka (1972).
It is a strange tale of hallucinations sung by Sal Marquez and Janet Ferguson (the tough-minded groupie in 200 Motels). Jeff Simmons' Hawaiian guitar sets up a dreamy smoothness worthy of Steely Dan, but with the words but you should be diggin' it while it's happening cause it just might be a one-shot deal, the tune derails into an aural nightmare. Such a device puts Sneaky Pete Kleinow's pedal steel virtuousity in a strange light, his shiny, snaking notes suddenly aberrant and strange. His solo abruptly terminates: one of Zappa's typical shocks. Though played in real time rather than achieved with a splice, it again sounds as if the music has started to run backwards.[1]
